Can you buy a gift card with a gift card?
Gift cards give you the freedom to buy whatever you want or need, completely removing that awkward moment when you unwrap a gift and have to hide your true feelings (socks, again?).
But while they're the ideal present, maybe you've recently received a gift card and are now wondering if you can use it to buy another one, maybe for a different store? Well, we have all the answers below to help you know what you can and can't do when it comes to buying a gift card with a gift card.
How to buy a gift card with a gift card
Let's say you have a Kroger gift card and now want to buy another with it. Here's what to do.
Sending gift cards online is straightforward. Just go through the usual steps of buying a gift card online, before inputting the number on your Kroger gift card instead of your usual card details.
If you prefer to shop in-store, that's great. You can buy a gift card with a gift card in the Kroger Family of Stores and our friendly associates are on hand to answer any questions you may have. Here are some steps to follow:
1. Choose your new gift card
You'll find a selection to choose from in store, in a range of values. You can use your Kroger gift card to purchase an alternative in the same value for an even swap, or you can put your gift card towards the cost of a higher-value card.
2. Take your card to the cashier
The great thing about shopping in store is that you can buy a new gift card while doing your grocery shopping. Simply put your card on the conveyor belt and the cashier will run it through with the rest of your groceries.
3. Hand over your Kroger gift card to pay for your new one
Your gift card will be treated like cash and used to cover the cost of the new one. If the new card is of a higher value, you’ll just need to pay the difference with cash or your debit card. The cashier will confirm the additional cost.
4. Complete your transaction and enjoy!
You've bought a new gift card, now it's time to use it to shop – online or in store.
Some things to note
It's important to remember that the ability to buy a gift card with a gift card does depend on the store. Some retailers don't allow you to do this. There isn't any set legal reason or rules but some stores may have different policies. Check what you can and can't do beforehand.
Why would you buy a gift card with a gift card?
There are plenty of reasons why you may want to buy a gift card with a gift card. We've detailed some of these below:
- To get a better price
You may find something you want is cheaper in another store. It's a good way of getting the exact thing that you want for less, without offending the person who gave you the gift card.
- To get a gift card for a store you prefer to shop at
You may not shop at the store your gift card is for and so want to buy a new one. For example, maybe the gift card you received is for a clothing store that isn't quite your style – there's nothing wrong with using it to buy another that can be used at a store you prefer.
- You want to split the value of your gift card
You could split the value of your gift card, ideal if you want to re-gift it to a friend or family member. This means you use it to buy something from the store and get another gift card in the value you want to give to that loved one.
